India won freedom on august 15, 1947, since then we have been celebrating the independence day every year. It is a very important day. It is a national festival. The rich and the poor celebrate it alike. In Delhi a grand function is held at the Red Fort.
The funcution begins at 7:30 a.m. Lakhs of people gather there. They are in their best dresses. They come from far and near. Many foreigners attend the function. Numberless cars and scooters drive to that place.
The Prime Minister unfurls the National Flag at 7:30 a.m. It is followed by a speech. The speech can be heard even from the radio. Crores of people hear it all over India. Many people watch the celebrations on the TV. When India got its independence, the public of India had chosen their first Prime Minister, Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru who had unfurled the tricolour National Flag at the Red Fort in the national capital, New Delhi for the first time. All the people rejoice this special day with great joy every year.
It has been declared as the national holiday when all the schools (government or private), offices, colleges, universities, educational institutions, organizations, companies and etc remain closed. It is celebrated with big enthusiasm in every schools, colleges and other educational institutions by the students.
